The Lika Museum in Gospić

The Lika Museum in Gospić was established in 1958, and since then has been taking care of all movable and immovable cultural heritage in the entire Lika area.

The museum is situated in the old city center, and in 1965, it moved to its current building, built in the late Baroque style and classified as a class B cultural heritage monument.

The building has been restored several times, and the latest restoration (1995-1997) served to repair the war damage incurred during the Croatian Homeland War.

It is classified as a complex museum, because it consists of several collections:

  • The Archaeological Collection
  • The Numismatic Collection
  • The Cultural-Historical Collection
  • The Gallery Collection
  • The Natural History Collection (currently being established)
  • The Museum Collection

Aside from collecting, processing, preserving, and exhibiting cultural heritage, the museum also conducts scientific research in archaeology, ethnography and history, and also works with educational institutions.

At the moment, visitors can see the permanent archaeological collection, titled “Terra Viva”, and the ethnographic collection in the reconstructed Lika-style log-cabin, situated in the museum’s atrium.
The gallery association plays a significant role in preserving the Lika Annals of Art, or “Likanale” (Likannals) for short. This traditional cultural event has striven continuously, since 1966, to exhibit new results from the areas of painting, printing and sculpture from artists connected to Lika.

The Lika Museum in Gospić also encompasses the Nikola Tesla Memorial Center, opened on 10 July 2006, on the 150th anniversary of the birth of Nikola Tesla.
